Hearing Evaluation and Testing

Is This for Me?

If you’ve started asking people to repeat themselves, find restaurants harder than they used to be, or feel like people are mumbling more often, it may be time for a hearing evaluation. You don’t have to wait until hearing loss becomes severe before seeking answers.

A hearing evaluation is also appropriate if you’ve noticed ringing in your ears, difficulty hearing on the phone, increased listening fatigue, dizziness, sudden changes in hearing, or if your family has expressed concerns about your hearing.

What Is a Hearing Evaluation?

One of the most common things we hear is:

“I can hear people talking—I just can’t understand what they’re sayin.”

Many patients assume this is simply part of getting older or believe they aren’t ready for hearing aids. In reality, changes in speech understanding are often one of the earliest signs of hearing loss.

We also see patients who have lived with hearing difficulties for years because they weren’t sure where to start. A hearing evaluation provides clear answers, whether the solution is hearing aids, hearing protection, medical treatment, communication strategies, or simply reassurance that your hearing is healthy.

Sometimes the best outcome is confirming your hearing is normal. Other times, identifying hearing loss early allows us to discuss options before it begins to significantly affect communication, relationships, and quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most comprehensive hearing evaluations take about 30 minutes. If additional testing is needed, we’ll explain what to expect before we begin.

Absolutely not. Our goal is to help you understand your hearing and provide honest recommendations. Some patients need hearing aids, while others may benefit from medical treatment, hearing protection, communication strategies, or simply routine monitoring.

Adults should consider a baseline hearing evaluation around age 50, or sooner if they notice changes in hearing, tinnitus, significant noise exposure, or have a family history of hearing loss. If you already have hearing loss, we’ll recommend a follow-up schedule based on your individual needs.
